Mineral Deposits in Southern Norway OMT
Peter Ihlen, Tom Heldal, NGU

Mines and quarries presently in operation as well as important past producers will be visited, showing the diversity of deposits formed during the Proterozoic and Palaeozoic era along the margin of the Oslo Palaeo-rift and in adjacent Mesoproterozoic gneiss complexes to the west and south. Excursion stops comprise volcanogenic base-metal sulphide ores, stratabound sediment-hosted Co-Cu-As-S ores, Fen carbonatite complex with Fe and Nb-REE ores, rare metal NYF-type and amazonite-cleavelandite-lepidolite pegmatites, hydrothermal veins of base metals and native silver, as well as metasomatic rutile and apatite mineralizations. In addition, the excursion will visit producing quarries of Norway’s national stone larvikite, and of fossiliferous limestone for cement production. Starting point: Oslo.

The Rogaland Anorthosite Province, southern Norway RAP
Pål Thjømøe, Magma Geopark, Richard Wilson, Århus University
This 10th ICAM post-congress excursion gives an overview of the Rogaland Anorthosite Province that contains several Proterozoic massive anorthosite bodies, the largest layered intrusion in western Europe and granulite facies gneisses. Features to be seen include unique anorthosite landscapes, plagioclase and orthopyroxene megacrysts, plagioclase labradorescence, excellent rhythmic layering, evidence for magma replenishment, and sedimentary structures in layered igneous rocks. Evidence of the long history of the economic importance of iron-titanium deposits will be examined at Blåfjell, and we will visit the major ilmenite mine at Tellnes. Large quantities of “white anorthosite” are exported as aggregate. The layered intrusion is currently being investigated for a combination of ilmenite, magnetite and apatite ores. Magma Geopark is located in the area (www.magmageopark.com). Starting point: Stavanger.
